How to Take Control of Your Life: Your Perspective, Your Responsibility
There is no reality. What we think is reality is actually our perceptions or beliefs that determine how see events that determine our personal reality. I am sure you have often seen two people witness the same event and see it so differently. In the current Olympics if you are a Canadian watching the women’s soccer I am sure reality for you was how well the Canadian women did and would have won gold with a couple of different officiating decisions. If you are an American I am sure your reality was the American dominance in the game and how it was just a matter of time before you won gold.
Reality vs. Perception
As you can see your reality is shaped by your perception or picture of what should happen. Your mind will shape what you see to fit your reality. The mind knows no bounds when it comes to fooling itself. When an event takes place you interpret it based on your filters such as your beliefs and values. When your interpretation of reality matches with what your internal image of what should be there is no conflict. You do feel loss of control when these two do not match.
Challenge Your Perception
I find when my perception of what ought to be and my interpretation of what is do not match I start writing. In my journal I write down, as close as I can when you consider my internal biases, the facts of what I saw without interpretation. Under that I write as many possible interpretations as I could possibly make if I had different perspectives. This often changes my reaction to an event as I see it through a different lens. Remember something in itself is not good or bad, it is only our interpretation that makes it so. Is it possible that you would look at a driver who is speeding and impatient differently if you knew he was normally an excellent driver but at this moment he is trying to get his child to the emergency room before she bleeds to death? I suspect you would look upon his driving in a very different manner and be sure to let him by. Perception is reality.
It is your responsibility to monitor your interpretations. You are in control of your life. If you blame others for your unhappiness or loss of control then there is nothing you can do. You cannot change them. If you take responsibility for your life then you are in control. You can change you and the way you look at your reality in order to take total control.
It is your responsibility to take control of your life and make it what you would like it to be. No one else can do that for you. You cannot control what happens to you but you are in total control of how you react to what happens to you. Take control now!
